Coal Miner seriously injured in Raleigh County
Miner Hurt After Accident At Raleigh County Coal Mine
A miner was seriously injured Saturday afternoon after an accident at Alpha Natural Resources coal mine in Raleigh County.
“A miner was hit by a rock in the hip,” T.D. Lively, a spokesman for the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
The incident happened just after 2 p.m. at Alpha’s Marfork Coal Slip Ridge #1 Mine, Lively said.
The miner was taken to a local hospital, Lively said. He said that his office was contacted by Raleigh County 911 shortly after the incident. Emergency officials later called back to say the injury was “fairly serious,” Lively said.
Inspectors from the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training are on the scene trying to figure out what caused the coal mining accident.
The name of the injured coal miner hasn’t been released. Fortunately, no other injuries have been reported.
