7 Easy Ways to Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions in 2020

Wishing You a Safe, Successful and Happy New Year

Happy 2020 on Country West Virginia RoadHappy New Year from all of us at West Law Firm! If you’re like many people, you may have already made a few New Year’s resolutions. On the other hand, like many others, you may be hesitant to set New Year’s resolutions because of past difficulties achieving them.

Fortunately, a few recent studies have identified some easy steps you can take that will ensure you make progress in achieving your goals for 2020 and beyond.

7 Proven Steps to Achieve Your 2020 Goals

1. Partner Up

Did you know that you are more likely to reach a goal if you work with a partner to achieve that goal? One study, for example, showed that participants who committed to a 12-month fitness program with a partner had a 94% success rate of finishing the program compared to a 67% success rate of participants who had no partner.

2. Write it Down (and Make it Happen)

One of the most well known goal-setting studies was supposedly conducted on Harvard MBA students.  The story goes something like, “In 1979, each student was asked “have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?”  Only 3% had written goals and plans, 13% had goals but not in writing, and 84% of the students had no defined goals.

Ten years later the students were interviewed again and the results were mind-blowing. The 13% of the class who had goals but did not write them down were making twice the amount of money as the 84% of the class who had no goals.  More shocking, the 3% of the class who put their goals in writing were earning, on average, 10 times more than the other 97% of the class combined!”

Although the truth about whether the above study ever took place is now in question, a recent study at the Dominican University proves that writing down your goal makes it more likely that you will achieve them. You can write down a simple list of goals or apply the following proven strategies when writing your goals down. Either way, you’re almost certain to make progress toward your goal if you write it down.

Set SMART Goals

You may have heard of “SMART goals” already.  There are many variations of what SMART stands for, but the essence is this – goals should be:

  • Specific.
  • Measurable.
  • Attainable.
  • Relevant.
  • Time Bound.

3. Specific Goals

Setting clear and well-defined goals will help you overcome the obstacles vague or generalized goals present by not providing clear direction. Remember, goals are like maps that show us the way. The more specific your goals are the easier it will be to get where you want to go.  In fact, knowing where we want to go is half the battle.  If we don’t know where we want to go, we probably won’t end up there, as the adage goes.

4. Measurable Goals

So you can measure your progress and track your success, state your goal in measurable terms.  For example, if your goal is to lose weight, state it as, “I will lose 2 pounds every month in 2015 for a total of 24 pounds.”  (By the way, this is a real goal — mine:-)  Then you can measure your success each month and get immediate feedback.  You will also not miss out on a well-earned celebration that comes with knowing you have actually achieved your goal.

5. Attainable Goals

Setting achievable goals will help you avoid the obstacles unrealistic goals present, including the risk of eroding self-confidence.  Another strategy to overcome feeling bad about ourselves is to focus on the process instead of the end result.  For example, if you set a daily goal of walking 20 minutes, you can enjoy the satisfaction of achieving your goal each day, and you will ultimately lose weight without having to worry about the scales.

Setting goals that stretch you (but not strain you) has been proven to make you more likely to achieve your goals. By setting realistic yet challenging goals, you also will be more likely to achieve the greatest personal satisfaction.

6. Relevant Goals

Identifying your core values and the direction you want your life and career to take is perhaps the most important step to take in achieving goals and a life that are satisfying.  Identifying what your ideal life will look like a month from now, a year from now, and so forth will help you set goals that are relevant to your vision.  By keeping goals aligned with your vision, you’ll develop the focus you need to get ahead and avoid setting scattered and inconsistent goals that won’t give you the results and life you want.

7. Time-Bound Goals

Setting goals with a deadline is a proven strategy for success.  This also means you know when you can celebrate success. Deadlines will increase your sense of urgency, which in turn will give you greater focus and energy.  In fact, for this reason, some productivity experts suggest that you set artificial deadlines, which is essentially what setting time-bound goals means.

I’ve worked with other attorneys in the past, but West Law Firm has gone over and above my expectations! I was expecting the same old runaround about when somebody could get to my case. They kept me up-to-date about everything happening in my case so there was no need for me to call and ask questions continuously. They really worked for me and I would highly recommend these people.
